Just aim for a bump on the horizon and try to walk on rock,

The day after Christmas, I went on a solo hike to Lake Blanche, just to see the Sundial covered in snow. The last time I went there was more than a year ago. Snowshoe-ers had packed the trail down pretty good so I didn't sink in the snow too bad (didn't wear snowshoes). Lake Blanche is about 3 miles from the parking lot. The temperature was 15 degrees F when I started at 11:45am. I got to Lake Blanche at 2:45pm. Took pictures until 3:30pm, and made it back to the truck at 4:45pm. I was cruising down to get back before dark, and I made it. The snow cushioned every step, so no sore knees like last time.

Climb up Frenchman Mountain - Dec 2009

Climbed to the top of Frenchman Mountain a few weeks ago. We parked on Los Feliz in between Bonanza and Washington and just climbed up the wash, including a small cliff near the top. 1 hr 15 min up, and 1 hr 15 min down, right as it was starting to get dark. Kodak BW400CN film.

We drove out and got to the White Mountain trailhead late at night. We set up camp and went right to sleep. After a big breakfast, we started hiking about 8am. 7 miles and almost 4 hours later, we were on top of White Mountain Peak. On the way back to the truck, I made a one mile detour over to Mt. Barcroft, which is the 13er behind the Barcroft research facility. We met back up and finished the hike together. We drove up the windy dirt road, and I got carsick. We got gas in Bishop, CA and washed the sweat off our faces in a McDonald's bathroom. We got dinner and Carl's Jr. and then drove to the Queen's Mine trailhead of Boundary Peak, NV. Set up camp and went to sleep by about 9pm. Woke up, ate a big breakfast, and hiked about 4 miles and almost 4000 vertical feet to the top of Boundary Peak, the highest point in Nevada. I made the 3/4 mile traverse over to Montgomery Peak. The route was rocky and loose and steep, but fun. Montgomery is a little taller than Boundary. After making it back to the truck, we heated up a foil dinner and ate it on the drive back to Vegas.

Kelly and I drove south from Salem, UT for more than 20 miles through a winding canyon to get to the trailhead. We started at about 8am. We climbed up North Peak, since it was pretty much on the way to Mt. Nebo. We slid down the backside of North Peak through loose scree to Wolf Pass, and then climbed a very steep section to a false peak, then traversed across a knife-edge ridge to the northern most and highest peak of Nebo. The forecast said it was going to be partly cloudly, and it was. But the closer we got to afternoon, the closer the clouds got to us, and the darker they got. There was some rain to the east, but we made it down just in time. As we were approaching the car at the end of our hike, we looked back up to see dark clouds and rain all around the peak we were just at 3 hours before. Nice hike, about 9-10 miles total with about 4000 feet of elevation gain. And I learned the importance of eating a good breakfast before long hikes. I didn't eat very much for breakfast and I was really running on fumes on the way back.

I thought this was the peak, but it turned out to be a false peak. The true summit is slightly higher and just behind this one out of view. But this is a pretty nice cliff on the east face of the mountain.

Brandon and my dad and I started the hike at 6:45am from Trail Ridge Canyon up to Mummy Mountain. (those pictures are on a black and white roll--will post when I get them developed) My dad went home and me and Brandon continued along the North Loop trail to Mt. Charleston, then around the South Loop trail to Griffith Peak and then back down to our car at the Cathedral Rock parking lot. We had to walk the last mile or two in the dark, and got to the car right at 8:00pm. It was a good twenty miles and our legs could feel it. I never hiked with trekking poles before, but man they sure are nice. Really does make it easier on your knees, etc.

Guess how we took this picture? I carried my heavy tripod all the way up there! Stupid me, but it came in handy.

On a spur of the moment kind of thing, Kelly and I decided to climb Timpanogos. We started at 2:30am, saw a huge bullwinkle moose right on the trail 10 yards from us, which scared the crap out of us, took a couple little power naps cause we didn't sleep more than an hour the night before, and made it to the top around 9:30am.

We hid some of our gatorades in the bushes in the meadow at 10000 ft. so we wouldn't have to carry them that last 1750 feet up, and drank them when we got back to the bottom. We didn't slide down the glacier, we walked the long way back down. Oh yeah, we saw a few mountain goats on the way up and back down, near the top. I was an idiot and brought the Mamiya RZ67 and my canon cameras, and tripod all the way to the top.

The Mamiya is huge and people at the summit were asking me how I got it up there...(the pictures of me and Kelly in front of the little hut were taken with the Mamiya). The black and white film is Ilford HP5+ (ISO 400) and the color is Fuji Velvia 50 and 100 slide film.

I heard the Karate Kid movie was filmed somewhere on this beach, but we couldn't really find the place from the movie. I think part of Grease might have been filmed here also.

Yosemite Valley is one of my favorite places. Too bad I only got to stay a few days. Spring is the best time to see the waterfalls at max flow. It was great! I shot all of these on Ilford FP4 and Kodak Plus-X Pan black and white film. I also am starting to offer fine art black and white silver gelatin prints. These are custom printed on fiber paper using traditional wet darkroom techniques. They look beyond beautiful. These scans don't even compare to the real prints. These are the best looking prints, in my opinion. They will last hundreds of years too. You can see more or buy a print HERE.

I went golfing a couple months ago with my best friend Curtis out in Death Valley, CA. 214 feet below sea level means if you normally hit the ball 275 yards in Las Vegas, it only goes 215 yards at Furnace Creek. We went on a weekend trip to Bryce Canyon National Park. We got lucky and got a campsite at the North campground, which is very close to the main amphitheater. We woke up before dawn and went to Sunset Point and hiked down to Thor's Hammer for some sunrise photos. We hiked the Navajo Loop and Queen's Garden trails. These are all straight out of the camera, on Fuji Pro400H film. There will be another post tomorrow.

Red Rock - Calico Tanks hike

A couple weekends ago we went hiking in Red Rock Canyon on the Calico Tanks hike. The weather was beautiful. And the dog came too. Can't do these kind of hikes in the summer when it is 115 degrees. These are film, Fuji 400H, taken with a medium format camera: Mamiya C330 TLR camera that I borrowed from a friend. There are also some 35mm pics from the hike coming soon.
